SOAR Scholarship Application – Me Ra Koh

I stumbled across an amazing opportunity a few weeks ago and just completed my application video. Me Ra Koh, a great photographer has put together the SOAR Scholarship for 2010. Three lucky women will be given an amazing learning opportunity to prepare them, and propel them into the world of professional photography.

I work full-time and have many school loans to pay off. Heading into an entirely different profession is not the easiest thing to do. There is so much knowledge to gain, and there are so many great photographers out there putting out great workshops that I would love to attend. But the money just isn’t there to do those things. I have been doing all I can to research and learn online, through books, magazines, and network as best as I can with other local professional photographers. But this SOAR Scholarship holds priceless opportunities.

Three lucky women will be mentored by some of the greatest photographers out there – Me Ra Koh, David Jay, Carey Schumacher – they will attend various workshops around the country and will have homework and assignments to help them build confidence and skills necessary to be successful as a photographer. In return for this educational experience, the women will document their journey through blogging and video blogging on a regular basis. During this 12 month journey these women will get a chance to soak in information from the best and most successful in the business. And it’s not just the technical stuff, it’s the life stuff, the real life stuff that’s important to learn as well. Seriously, I can’t put it into words what a tremendous opportunity this would be if I were awarded a scholarship.

Ok, enough from me because I could keep going on and on about it. I made a video and posted it along with my application today. The video submitted was 2 minutes long – but I had to edit it down to meet time requirements. The original take was nearly 4 minutes long. That is the version I have posted for you. My approach was to just be me. I didn’t script anything. I pushed record and just spoke from my heart. I felt that being me, being in the moment, and being absolutely candid would be the best video I could make…..I get a bit emotional, but hey, this whole journey, following my dreams to be a photographer — it IS emotional and it IS empowering and every step I take towards these dreams, I am just SO thankful I saw the light of what “could be” in my life!
